Winston and Ian are residents since the 60's and 2010 respectively. In 2012 they met in the newly built allotments in Rockingham and havent stopped gardening ever since. What started as creating an allotment and establishling the first community garden on the Rockingham Estate quickly grew into a wider vision: to bring wildlife back into our green spaces and restore a sense of pride, connection and care within the neighbourhood.Over the years, that vision has blossomed into a remarkable community-led transformation. Together, residents and volunteers have established two allotments, planted more than 60,000 plants, created 1.2 kilometers of new hedgerow, developed 10 distinct garden zones, built wildlife ponds and an apiary, and planted 100 fruit trees to create mini orchards across the estate's 68 hectares. The success of this work led Southwark Council ecologists to collaborate on the Rockingham Estate Ecology Plan and Vision 2025–2030. Rockingham is now being considered for designation as a Site of Important Nature Conservation (SINC). The estate has also become the first of its kind accepted into the National Garden Scheme. The best is still yet to come.
